Africa was known known to be one of the most tropical continents of the known world. Although some areas were fertile and great for agriculture others were desert and barren or received long rainfalls and long dry periods leaving the soil unfertile. The Jungles held parasite with diseases. Some of the known civilizations at the time were formed in the Uper nile valley, Northern Ethiopia, nile river valley and in east africa the swahili civilization. The Nubian civilization live in the Nile river valley which was south of egypt. The city of Meroe was the capitasl of the Nubian peoples. In the city were merchants, weavers, potters, and masons as well as servants laborers and slaves. The manufacture of iron and weapons was a booming industry in this area. The city benefited greatly from the trade routes as they had access to gold, ivory and other goods from the mediteranean. Antoehr source of wealth came from agriculture. Because of the decent rainfall agriculture could be practiced without relying on the flooding of the nile river such as egypt was forced to do. The Trading ability of meroe gave them great military powers. This nubian civilization came to an end as trade moved from following the nile to coming in on the red sea taking away access to trade markets. Also deforestation lost them their Agricultural abilities. In its places three new civilizations came to be. Axum was known as the christian kingdom in africa. Their main source of economy came from the agriculture ofWheat, barley, millet and teff. Their participation in the Red sea and Indian ocean trade routes allowed them to truly prosper as they fed the roman demand for pearls textiles and peppers. Other goods they sold out of the port on the east african coast were animal hides, slaves, obsidian, rhino horns, ivory and the axums were able to tax all of these goods as the African interior needed to pass the goods throught their lands to enter the sea trade routes. In the middle nile valley area a different civilization came to be. They had an urban center of more than 40,000 people and it is thought that they had no central government. These people have been thought to be like the indus valley people where they had no signs of military or hierarchy. Equality seemed to be prevelent in this area. these people were known as the jenne jeno.
