Chapter 8 was very intersting to me as we learn how developed china would become at such an early stage in human history.  Under the Sui dynasty Chinas Northern and Southern halves were connected by an intregal network of canals.  This Allowed china to move products freely through the country by boat.  Following the Sui were the Tang and Song dynasties.  Which were built on the Sui principles of unity.  This caused a rebirth in the country and would later be known as Chinas golden age.  This time promoted great literature, painting, cermaics and landscaping.  Neo Confucianism came to rise in the country which promoted education.  The government was divided into six different ministeries inclding a censorate whose purpose was to  check on the competence and ability of public officials to do their jos. Schools were established to prepare all boys equally for the examination system which would allow those that passed the ability to become a government official.  Although a large percentage of boys born to rich families still had a position held for them at least it was a step towads equality.  Chinas population during this time rose from 60 to 120 million.  Much of this prosperity came form their aility to now grow crops specificaly for sale.  With the abundance of food being available many were able to specialize in other skills.  Chinas industrial output in iron greatly rose providing many jobs.  During this time The chinese wee able to invent the first printing presses as well a commodity which would late be known as gunpowder.  Paper money began to take hold in the economy and with letters of credit and promissory notes became available.  Women although were now able to inherit lands and control their own dowrys were less likely to be included in the workforce and held more of a household role.  Foot binding became a common practice with women leaving them practically disabled.  How do these things spell out wealth do you ask?  Disabling the women meant that they were no longer needed to help provide income for the houe hold.   Letters of credit meant that the economy was strong enough where people werent afraid of not being paid back.  The Kow Tow was created during this time to open up trade between other societies.  The chinese emperor created this ritual to open trade and yet still hold a position of superiority.  Chinas held great incluence over Korea and Vietnam and help to shape Japan by sharing their culture.
